10 year plan outlining the development of Exiles and Caribbean rugby
|
| |
Upon the formation of West Indies Exiles, rising out of the ashes like the myhthical Phoenix, it was swiftly realised that direction and a battle plan was needed which would enable us to soar to the greatest heights possible.
Goals were set and a 10 year strategic plan was devised, split into 3 phases, to facilitate what we are going to achieve.
|
|
Goals
|
| |
- To bring together gentlemen passionate about Caribbean rugby, and for them to play on a regular basis.
- To identify other players of caribbean dissent, add them to the initial core founder squad, thereby increasing our database of players.
- To Establish West Indies Exiles as a credible and successful team on domestic fronts.
- To look to youth recruitment, and be instrumental in the development of young Caribbean players, both in their game and in their personal life by meeting other like minded Caribs.
- To look to develop community links and promote rugby to caribbean and black children, highlighting the fun, camararderie and opportunities we have experienced via rugby.
- To forge links with the rugby unions back 'Home' in the Caribbean.
- To run as a non-profit organisation with a view to providing kit, coaching and experience to our nations most at need in the West Indies.
- To help with the development of the game in the Caribbean.
- To bring players across to the UK for some rugby experience, so that they can take home the knowledge gained and impart it locally.
- To take a full team to the West Indies with a view to playing and being involved in grass roots rugby during our visit.
- To identify top flight players of Caribbean or black heritage willing to be affiliated to The Exiles and utilising their passion, skill and expertise.
- To identify top flight players of any background willing to help with the development of Caribbean rugby.
- To see continued success of West Indies Exiles on domestic and foreign shores.

Phase 1 - Years 0-3
|
| |
Phase one incorporates setting the team up and establishing a core squad of players from the outset. This squad will consist mainly of 'roots', but we have very generous friends who are willing to play for our cause and help out in the name of friendship, something closely akin to our philosophy.
Having initially established core players, we will identify tournaments to play in and enter these accordingly. Even at this stage silverware and/or prize money should not be beyond our reach. Any prize money won will be placed back into the running of the team initially. Operational costs wil be kept to minimum allowing our funds to grow if possible, in order to achieve longevity and ultimately our aims.
Potential sponsors need to be identified and together we will work to embrace the philosophy of The West Indies Exiles.
Heavy player recruitment is needed by all who play for the Exiles. Even when not wearing our colours, our players will act on our behalf as ambassadors for us.
Links with the home unions will be forged enabling us to work together. They can help identify UK based to us, and we can help identify UK based players to them, allowing for a symbiotic relationship and the continued development of Caribbean rugby and its associated players.
By the end of phase one, West Indies Exiles would have achieved notable success on the field, and become known amongst rugby circles. We will be known for our passion, pride, commitment, reggae rugby, and ultimately fair play on the field. At tournaments we like to bring the sunshine with us and entertain the masses.

Phase 2 Years 3-6
|
| |
At this stage we will really be hitting the ground running.
We will have a name, success, and a tangible product that is marketable. Efforts will be re-doubled to create sponsorship revenue with our past successes aiding us in our task. High profile players who wish to be associated with us will be identified, and their capabilities utilised appropriately in whatever form they are able to give.
Recruitment drive will still be at full throttle, with an emphasis on youth and continued development of young caribs who will be our future.
At this stage our links with home unions should be strong. Players with potential should be fast-tracked, and brought over to experience Exiles rugby in big tournaments. Lessons learnt and friendships can be taken back and shared with other players back 'home'.
Provision of basic rugby kit and equipment to our linked unions, and unions most in need should be initiated in whatever capacity we are able to offer.
Links to communities on the domestic front should be forged with a view to help development of the game to our Carib children.
Continued success on the field is a must. With the pace, power and dogged determination of 'The Maroons', we will now be challenging top teams regularly on the field of play.

|
Phase 3 Years 6-10
|
| |
Phase 1 & 2 will have been completed, but their objectives not forgotten. All that was achieved in the past will be continued in phase 3.
Tournaments will be played regularly to high level of competitiveness, yet with enjoyment, fairness and Caribbean spirit.
Community links will have been forged and programmes developed to help develop the game at Carib grass roots in the UK.
Strong links are very much in place with the home unions. Equpiment and kit can be dispatched and also the provision of coaching clinics amongst the islands led by overseas players/coaches will be up and running.
Player exchange programmes will be beginning to take shape.
West Indies Exiles as a brand will be established, and merchandising of our product will become a viable option.
Above all else a family will have been created across the many oceans and land masses of The Earth. The global game of rugby will have to stand up and recognise not only the potential, but also the success of The West Indies as a region rich in talent and natural ability, hungry for success.
